8th Grade Algebra

I thank you God for this most amazing day, for the leaping greenly spirits of trees, and for the blue dream of sky and for everything which is natural, which is infinite, which is yes.  ~e.e. cummings

8th Grade Math - Algebra I

Don't fool around in class - you never know who's watching!

A. COURSE DESCRIPTION

Algebra is taught at the 8th grade level.  The course is designed to instruct students in the basic understanding of algebra.  It includes the topics of simplifying and solving basic linear and quadratic equations, as well as how to deal with systems of equations.  The course also yields a basic understanding of inequalities.  The course teaches the basic language of algebra along with graphing and simplifications of polynomials and rational expressions.  Applications to geometry, probability, and statistics are also presented.

B. CLASS GOALS/OBJECTIVES

1.      To prepare students for high school math classes that best suit the individual student.

a.    to develop deep conceptual understanding in order to make sense of mathematics (students need to know not only how to apply skills and knowledge, but also when to apply them and why they are being applied).

b.    to master specific knowledge necessary for its application to real problems, for the study of related subject matter, and for the continued

c.    study of mathematics

d.    to learn and view mathematics as a way of thinking about and interpreting the world around them

e.    to recognize that mathematics is a creative part of human culture in much the same way as music or fine art

D. COURSE TOPICS/UNITS AND DATES

The actual dates of when topics are covered in class are generally dictated by the pace of the class.  We will be "bouncing around" in the textbook and we will be utilizing supplementary materials to cover the various topics.  The subject matter and sequence will determine where we are in the text and what additional materials are needed.

  F. GRADING PLAN

Report card grades are based upon the accumulated points a student scores on his/her tests compared to the total points for the quarter.

 G. COURSE COMPONENT SPECIFICS

Grading is compiled nearly exclusively by test and quiz scores.  However, I am very flexible on grading.  A student's individual effort plays a huge role in the report card grade.  Students are expected to take notes in class.  Class participation allows me to share the learning experience with all students, and I, in turn, enjoy learning from students. Homework is not graded, but if a student fails to do his/her homework, it will be marked in my grading book as a zero.  Three "zeroes" for missing homework reduces the student's report card grade by a half letter grade (a "B" would become a "B - minus").Five missing homework assignments will generate a call home to parents, and will reduce the student's letter grade by one full letter (a "C" would become a "D"). Students coming to class unprepared will generate the same actions as outlined above for “missing homework.”   I am very accessible and can be found in my room

in the morning before school, at lunch break, and during study hall.  I will help students after school if I do not have a scheduled meeting or a personal appointment.
