Let it begin... the 2012 Scripps Spelling Bee

The 8th graders will be engaged in the social and academic experience in which Richfield students of all abilities will compete on Fridays during their English classes.  The spelling competitions, activities and tests are in both written and oral format. For the written test, each word is spelled by all participants, and students correct their own papers at the end.

We will begin the first week with a showing of Akeelah and the Bee during class on December 14th-16th.  Students can bring their own snacks if interested in watching the movie.  Our first friendly spelling competition will take place on Tuesday, December 21, 2011!

Our school spelling bee will take place sometime in February.  This spelling bee will consist of the top 20 spellers from both 8th grade classes. This final competition will be held in front of the other middle school students.  After our district spelling bee, the winner and the runner up, from Richfield School, will then move on to the Regional Spelling Bee, this is usually held in late February or early March. Last year  the bee was held in Waupun.  More information will be sent home to the parents of those two students.

In order for any student to view the movie, students should return the permission slip to Mrs. Thoma by Tuesday, December 13, 2011.  Any student, who does not, will do assigned reinforcement spelling work in another location during the time of the viewing of Akeelah and the Bee.

Welcome, Spellers!

Our spelling friendly competitions will be in written format.

I'll give the word and definition and all students will write out each

word! You will not need to spell out loud individually!

It is up to you to develop a routine with practicing your words. Bring your list to school and study during your free time after homework is complete, or as nightly homework.  Be familiar with each list before coming in to our classroom!

Be prepared to compete over these lists:

: Words from Latin

: Words from Arabic, Asian, French

: Words from Old English and Dutch

:   Words from German

: Words from New World languages, Japanese, Greek

: Words from Italian and Spanish

: Spelling Bee during ESP or lunch

8th Grade Language Arts.

This is not an  ordinary class!

You Think English is Easy?

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all.  That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

p.s Why doesn’t ‘buick’ rhyme with ‘quick’?
