  3.  Ellis Island Records- http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/  or http://www.ellisislandimmigrants.org/
  4. Other Genealogy- http://www.familysearch.org/
  5. The Port of Entry: Immigration. http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/ndlpedu/features/port/start.html The website has numerous pictures of life in the big cities in the early 1900’s.  Some of the pictures show the ethnic areas in New York City around the turn of the century.  In the webquest students will tell a story of a fictional immigrant from a different part of the world through the use of primary sources and pictures.  This site could be used for different pictures showing how the life of the immigrant may have been when they first arrived if they settled in NY.
  6. Chinese Immigration. http://www.monroe.k12.fl.us/kls/Immigration/Chinese/chineseimmigration.htm The website explains the route of the Chinese immigrant.  The site does a good job of explaining all the steps of immigration starting with reasons why they may have left, going through Angel Island, and jobs and settlements in the United States.  The site was created by a teacher and is student friendly.  Students who would be creating the life of Chinese immigrant would use this website to help their story.

  1. Angel Island: Immigrants journey of Chinese Americans        http://www.angel-island.com/  This website is much like the first website of Ellis Island in that it gives oral history of immigrants arriving at Angel Island.  The site is shows actual pictures of the Chinese Americans and how they look now.  Students would use this site to understand create the part of their story dealing with the arrival at Angel Island.

  1. Touring the Turn of the century America http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/detroit/dethome.html The site is in the library of congress American Memories website.  It is a collection of pictures from 1880’s to 1920s.  The site will be useful for students because that is the time period will they will focus their immigration project on.  It has numerous pictures students can use to help tell the story of their immigrant.

  1. Wisconsin Turning Points: Immigration and settlement.

http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/turningpoints/subtopic.asp?tid=4  The site is created by the Wisconsin Historical Society and has numerous sections dealing with numerous topics.  I will direct students to this part of the site because it has a lot of primary sources dealing with immigration of Wisconsin.  The only problem with this site is it does have a vast amount of information and students will have to spend some time sorting through what is valuable and what is not.

  1. The American Immigration Home Page http://www.bergen.org/AAST/Projects/Immigration/    Students at Academy for the Advancement of Science and Technology created this page. It contains information on the reasons for immigration, who the immigrants to the U.S. were, peaks/waves of immigration, methods of transportation and ports of arrival, process of entering the U.S., destination/places where they settled, treatment/reception by other Americans, effects/impact on America (positive and negative), opportunities for and success of immigrants, degree of assimilation, what did immigrants find distinctive about America, and laws restricting immigration. I did not write this explanation, but it was so good I did not want to change it either.
  2. Immigration stories of yesterday and today http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/immigration/tour/stop1.htm   The site is a virtual tour of Ellis Island.  It has images, video and oral history showing the experiences different immigrants had when arriving at Ellis Island.  Students would use this site to understand create the part of their story dealing with the arrival at Ellis Island.  In this site students are able to take a virtual tour around Ellis Island and hear first hand accounts of how the people felt when they arrived.  The source is created by scholastic therefore I am assuming it is reliable and creditable.

Non Internet Resources

  1. Textbook

  2. Books about the Immigration of different ethnic groups to Wisconsin.  These books were just ordered and I do not have the bibliography available at home.  I change the information tomorrow.  These are a serious of books that show different ethnic group arrival to Wisconsin.  The books would be used throughout the unit to help students complete the task of how their character arrived in the United States and eventually migrated to Wisconsin.  The main reason for the use of the book would be to show students the different push and pull factors that made immigrants leave their country and choose Wisconsin as their home.
