| Reading       Reading is one of the most important skills your child will acquire. Learning how to read is a complicated process. Beginning in infancy, speech and vocabulary development begins. Vision and hearing processes need to be developed. Even large motor coordination is an indicator of reading readiness.
    More importantly is the desire to learn how to read. A child that observes adults in their family reading, are more likely to become avid readers. These and many other tips on helping your child become a successful reader are included in the links below. |
                Reading Instruction     In the Richfield Joint School District No. 1 it is a goal to create lifetime readers. Students who are curious about the world, and have the skills to evaluate information,   the ability to think.
    Good classroom instruction starts with the teacher. Our primary teachers are the finest. They strive to achieve reading success for every child. They utilize the Harcourt Brace "Trophies" materials. These materials were selected because of their systematic phonics instruction, phonics related spelling, and six-traits writing component. "Trophies" also uses guided reading, so the classroom teacher can differentiate for a wide variety of abilities.
    Upper primary, grades 3-5, also utilize the "Trophies" materials. But these experienced teachers also use a variety of genre's and content area reading materials. The goal is to meet the needs and interests of a diverse student body.
    At the middle school level instruction continues with the desire to make reading interesting, exciting, and social. Students reading activities fluctuate between literature circles, reading workshop, mini-lessons, and differentiated class novels. |
              Supplemental Reading     A few students need extra time or more individualized instruction to become a proficient reader.
