Our class in room 118 is a great place to learn how to set goals, make decisions, and solve problems. Our first job is to decide what kind of classroom we want, and then we work together as a group to write rules that would govern our classroom. Every student must sign our rules and agree to them.

READER'S AND WRITER'S WORKSHOP
The ownership for making choices continues into our reading and writing which we call Reader's and Writer's Workshop. Students read from a variety of genres. Daily student book talks, literature circles, the arrival of newspapers, vocabulary building, and providing a variety of choices for reading all promote student interest and ownership.
In Writer's Workshop, students learn to identify and integrate the 6 traits of writing into their own writing. They do this by studying the writing of great authors and the writing modeled by teachers and students. The fifth-grade authors are encouraged to write in a variety of genres and for a variety of real-life purposes.
You will see writers in our room brainstorming for ideas, writing, revising, self-editing, peer editing, and publishing with pride.
Public speaking is another big part of our language arts curriculum. We build confidence and self-esteem by giving informational, persuasive, and "how-to" speeches.
MATH
Fifth-grade math is a team effort in room 118 at Richfield. Students work in teams or groups and learn to model their problem solving strategies to the class. All math is related to real-life situations. One example is the holiday shopping and checkbook activity students do in December.
Every Thursday students work on math minutes which is a review of what 5th grade math students need to know. Every Friday is a "Ticket-out-the-door," a quick check of everything learned during the week in math. But most of all, math is fun!
Some of our favorite math websites are:

Problem solving strategies are modeled in front of the other students in math class. Sometimes students model at the overhead projector, and sometime students are modeling their strategies in teams.
ECONOMIC SYSTEM
All students work in our classroom within an economic system. This system allows students the opportunity to experience 21st century skills of financial awareness, innovative thinking, and entrepreneurship. Within our classroom setting, students apply for jobs, earn money, rent their desk or save to pay it off, choose to make loans or charitable contributions, and may even establish their own business. This economic system starts at the beginning of the school year and runs through June culminating in an auction on the last day of school. Information to parents goes home on the first day of school.
