This website will be underconstruction soon...stay tuned for a new look!!!

I can't believe that the school year is coming to a close!  It really went by very fast and I know that I will miss your children when they move on.  They were and are wonderful to work with in class.  I thank you for sharing your child with me and hope that I have helped to prepare them for the oncoming middle school experience!!!!

Here's an update on classroom activities:

Reading:  We are reading "My Side of the Mountain" by Jean Craighead George.  This classic Newbery Award winner has been a favorite in fifth grade.  It ties in perfectly with our Ecosystem unit in Science class.  The students are learning about wilderness survival and wildlife.  Please ask your child to tell you about the book and what she/he has learned so far about surviving alone.

Science class is busy learning about Ecosystems.  We have built an aqarium and terrarium (1 per every group of three)  and worked hard to balance life in an ecocolumn.  We have fish, snails, elodea, duckweed, algae, pill-bugs and crickets inhabiting our systems.  The students record their observations every other day and are enjoying watch things change and grow.  The grass, alfalfa and mustard seed are growing at a rapid pace and several groups have reported baby snails.

The students will soon learn about common pollutants that threaten our ecosystems.  Salt and fertilizer run-off, as well as acid rain, will all invade their columns and they will see first hand the devastating effect these common pollutants have on our environment.

Social Studies is now concentrating on the Southwest region of the United States.
